Four staff members from Body by Design Clinic in Nairobi are set to be charged with manslaughter following the death of Lucy Wambui Kananu, a patient who underwent a cosmetic procedure at the facility last year.

The accused include surgeon Robert Maweu Mutula, George Wakaria Njoroge, and Lilian Edna Wanjiru, the clinic's proprietor. They were expected to appear in court on Tuesday for plea-taking but failed to do so, leading to a rescheduled hearing on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP).

Lucy Wambui Kananu tragically passed away on October 6, 2024, at Omnicare Medical Limited, also known as Body by Design, located on Kabarsiran Avenue, Nairobi. She had sought cosmetic surgery at the facility, which was promoted as a health clinic but was later classified by government records as a beauty spa.

An autopsy report confirmed that her death resulted from complications linked to the procedures performed at the clinic.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) ordered the immediate closure of Body by Design Clinic. Authorities cited several violations.
