Police investigating Lilian Waithera's murder have ruled out the idea that she got shot accidentally or coincidentally. Lilian Waithera was a National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) staff member.

Investigators are attempting to determine why she was the target in the open air in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) along the famous Kaunda Boulevard.

Experts in ballistics and forensics investigated the crime scene to identify the structure from which the assassin fired the fatal shot.

The specialists relocated to the higher floors of nearby buildings, where the NHIF employee questioned residents.

Waithera's shot emanated at a high angle, the bullet entering her body through the collarbone and halting in the lungs, according to police reports. She passed just 5 minutes after the shooting.

Preliminary investigations suggest Waithera was the target, ruling out the chance that she was shot unintentionally or by coincidence.

After leaving her Upper Hill workplace at around 5 p.m. on Monday, Waithera strolled close to her coworker when the shot pierced her body.

Who wanted her dead and the reason for her assassination are the current mysteries the detectives are attempting to solve.

According to Waithera's relatives, neither did she seem anxious nor mention any threats to her life on that particular day or earlier.

NHIF, where Waithera had worked for more than 15 years, warned Kenyans on Wednesday not to speculate about the unsolved death of a staff member.

While investigations progress, ballistic specialists still analyse the bullet head taken from the deceased's body.
