According to survivors' statements, the m23 group killed 20 men and raped over 60 women in the northern kivu province. they claim that the attack was to humiliate civilians they think are supporters of rival groups including the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) and local Mai-Mai militants.

According to survivors and witnesses, after taking control of Kishishe, groups of M23 rebels went house-to-house, indiscriminately killing every adult male they found and raping scores of women, including gang rape.

M23 rebel group has been accused of causing the deaths of hundreds in the volatile region of the DRC making thousands of others flee the country. kinsasha has accused Rwanda of financially supporting the m23 rebel group and their activities in the region.

A report by the European Union reported that Rwanda was behind the group's activities a claim that is supported by most western countries and kinsasha. Rwanda has denied the claims saying that they play no part in the conflict in the congo and that only congo is to blame for the violence.

Tensions between the two countries have been high over the past few months, a few days ago Rwanda accused DRC soldiers of shooting at its soldiers at a border post.DRC denied the claims saying that the fight was between congo soldiers and rebel groups and not Rwandan soldiers.

A few months ago Rwanda shot at a congo fighter jet that they allege was in its airspace terming it a violation of their sovereignty. DRC denied the claims and called the shooting of their fighter jet as an act of war.

Both Rwanda and DRC are accusing each other of trying to back out of the Luanda summit peace deal.
