Chairman of the KRA Board Antony Mwaura said in a statement that Mr Mburu resigned to pursue personal interests.

Before being named KRA Commissioner-General in July 2019 for a three-year tenure, Mr Mburu worked for KRA's audit and intelligence sections for a very long period.

KRA recently appointed the incumbent Commissioner of Domestic Taxes, Rispah Simiyu, as acting Commissioner-General.

The letter of resignation from FCPA Commissioner-General Githii Mburu, who left to pursue personal activities, was received by the Board today. Following the departure, FCCA Rispah Simiyu, an advocate, has been named the acting commissioner-general by the Board, effective February 23, 2023, and continuing until a substantive and competitive replacement has been found, according to KRA.

The Board expresses its gratitude to Mr Mburu for his contribution to KRA and the Republic of Kenya and sends its best wishes for success in his future undertakings.

Ms Simiyu is a "seasoned and grounded tax practitioner with over 19 years of experience," according to the organization. She worked at Standard Chartered Bank Kenya as the regional tax manager for East Africa before joining KRA in 2018. In 2001, she started working at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where she eventually attained the position of Tax Manager.

A Change In Management

In place of Ms Simiyu, Pamela Ahago, the KRA's Western area coordinator, has been named the interim commissioner of domestic taxes.

David Mwangi replaced Lilian Nyawanda as acting Commissioner of Customs and Border Control.

In a dual appointment that also included the appointment of Dr Edward Karanja as the Commissioner for Investigations and Enforcement, Ms Nyawanda was given the position in March 2021.

Moreover, Dr Terra Saidimu, who was the Commissioner for Intelligence and Strategic Operations, was fired by KRA.
