Nigeria's three main opposition parties have called for the cancellation of the presidential elections, calling it a sham.

The opposition parties headed by atiku abubakar of the people's democratic party and peter obi of the labour party have claimed rigging happened in the elections that saw all progressive congress party candidates bola tinubu declared the winner after getting 8.9 million of the votes cast.

"The election is irretrievably compromised, and we have totally lost faith in the entire process," Labour Party chairman Julius Abure told reporters and representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

"We demand that this sham of an election should be immediately cancelled," Abure said. "We also call for a fresh election to be carried out."

The elections were mostly peaceful except for a few instances when gangs attacked electoral counting stations, but the threats were quickly neutralized. There were also complaints of slow systems when uploading results to the servers. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed they experienced technical glitches.

The opposition, however, claims that failures in the electoral systems were used to manipulate the results in favour of the all progressive congress party candidate bola tinubu.

"This election is not free, and far from being fair and transparent," Abure said.

"President Muhammadu Buhari, this is the time of a great test of your integrity. Use your office to save Nigerians from this electoral mismanagement."

In his acceptance speech, bola tinubu said that being elected president is a serious mandate, and he accepts to serve Nigerians and to make the country great, adding that he appeals to his fellow contestants to form a team and work together and that they must build together.

The country experienced the lowest voter turnout. the turnout has been on the decline since the 2003 elections. Nigeria has over 90 million registered voters but only about 20 million people actually voted in the presidential elections.
