Anti-riot police officers were deployed on Wednesday morning near the Kisumu State Lodge's entrance on the Jomo Kenyatta highway.
The deployment caught motorists off guard and forced them to take alternate routes to their destinations.
The deployment of officers has been confirmed by Nyanza Regional Police Chief Karanja Muiruri, who says it is normal police protection and surveillance around government installations such as the Kisumu State Lodge.
This blockade comes barely hours before the expiration of the 14 days ultimatum azimio la Umoja coalition leader raila odinga had given to the kenya kwanza administration. The former prime minister said that after 14 days, his supporters would march to the state house to demand the changes.

The azimio la Umoja coalition leader had asked president ruto to lower the prices of basic commodities in order to reduce the cost of living, adding that leaders in the current regime go to churches on Sundays, yet they are the biggest sinners.

Raila Odinga maintains that the Kenya Kwanza regime is in power illegally, a claim shared by other leaders in the Azmio coalition. The former prime minister claims he defeated president William Ruto by more than 2 million votes in the presidential election. Nonetheless, his votes were stolen.
The former prime minister claims that Wafula Chebukati, the former chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, conspired with officials from the Kenya Kwanza regime to rig the elections. Odinga insists that Ruto and his administration resign for a new election.
