Three Kenyan women in India have been detained and suspected of having hidden gold.

According to customs officers at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the three were apprehended attempting to bring disguised gold into the nation.

According to sources, the three Kenyan women who arrived from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Friday had more than three kg of gold worth Sh22 million.

Their shoes' soles and their undergarments both had gold on them.

"All of the passengers are female citizens of Kenya.


Customs authorities are looking into who the suspects bought the gold from and who was supposed to receive the shipment in Mumbai.

A Kenyan traveller from Nairobi was detained in India last week after pretending to be ill with a child to carry Sh54 million in gold.

The unidentified Kenyan, who purportedly arrived at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport with a portable oxygen concentrator and had fastened the mask to the child's face, is yet to be identified.

It is not the first time tourists carrying gold have been detained between Kenya and India.

Two Kenya Airways (KQ) flight crew members were detained with hidden gold last month at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.


The two were discovered with the hidden riches, according to Indian authorities, after they arrived at the Mumbai airport from Nairobi on two separate planes. India has laws against carrying concealed gold.

Kenya Airlines said in a statement that it does not support breaching national and international laws.

Kenya Airways (KQ) has learned that The Mumbai Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) has detained two of our employees for failing to provide adequate documents concerning precious metals in their possession.

"The problem is being looked into, and KQ is working with the investigation agencies. The company stated it would not tolerate employee behaviour that violates local or international regulations in the nations where KQ conducts business.
