In the past two weeks, nearly 60 fishermen from Remba Island in Suba North Constituency have been detained for violating fishing laws in Ugandan waters and trespassing on neighbouring Kenyan territory.

While on a fishing trip on Lake Victoria, Ugandan security personnel detained the fishermen and impounded their 30 boats.

Moses Lilan, the county commissioner for Homa Bay, claims that the fishermen's release has already been obtained following diplomatic negotiations between the governments of Kenya and Uganda.

Lilan claims that they are attempting to negotiate the release of the other boats still held by the Ugandan authorities.

He disclosed that his office works with the County Beach Management Units to sensitize the fishermen on Kenyan and Ugandan fisheries regulations to avoid rampant arrests.
