A man from The Hague, Netherlands, that is said to have fathered roughly 550 children through sperm donation has been sued because he may be raising the risk of unintentional incest.
Jonathan Jacob Meijer, 41, has been accused of deceiving clinics and putting children in psychological peril.
According to the Times, Meijer, a musician residing in Kenya, donated his sperm to at least 13 clinics, 11 located in the Netherlands.
A Dutch mother of one of Meijer's real children and the DonorKind Organization, which represents 25 families, are suing him.
According to Dutch legislation, sperm donors can only donate to a maximum of 12 women or fathers more than 25 children.
This is to avoid in-breeding and behavioural issues in children who may become distressed after discovering they have dozens of siblings. The dutch mother who sued Meijer said she would never have chosen him if she knew he had all those children.
"If I think about the consequences this could have for my child I am sick to my stomach."
The DonorKind Foundation is suing Meijer to prevent him from giving sperm to so many women. It also wants to know where he has donated sperm in the past and requires that all of his donated sperm in storage be disposed of if it is not reserved for a mother.
"We are taking action against this man because the government is doing nothing. He has a global reach via the internet and he does business with large, international sperm banks," The Telegraph quoted the organization as saying.
