According to Inspector General Japhet Koome, one police officer was killed during Thursday's anti-government protests led by Raila Odinga.

Koome issued a statement condemning the acts of violence and insisting that investigations into them have begun.

"As a result of yesterday's protests, one police officer in Kisumu died as a result of injuries sustained while on duty, and 20 officers were seriously injured while repelling violent demonstrators."

"Property whose value is unknown was destroyed as hooligans dressed as protesters invaded private property," he said.

Koome reassured the public that the police would do everything they could to keep them safe.
