Citizens and local officials in the region said a landslide in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo killed at least 19 people on Sunday.

The tragedy occurred shortly before sunrise in the neighbourhood of Bulwa in North Kivu's Masisi territory, according to village leader Chadrack Mbukanirwa Ndibanja.

He said at least 19 people were killed in the landslide, and the search for more victims would resume on Monday.

Local administrator Alphonse Mushesha Mihingano confirmed the recovery of 19 bodies but stressed that the number of deaths was provisional.

He said about 25 mothers and their children were doing laundry in a stream at the foot of a mountain when the ground gave way, burying some of them.

Musafiri Balume, a resident of Bulwa, gave a similar account, saying he lost a sister in the landslide, which occurred during heavy rains.
