Twenty-four hours after the tragedy, the body of Gilbert Odhiambo Ogola, a 28-year-old man who was trapped within a mine in Sogo village, Siaya County, was retrieved.
The Siaya DDC Robert Ng'etich, who monitored the entire drill, criticized miners for failing to follow safety protocols.
He said they had disregarded warnings that this season's heavy rains would make mines more prone to cave in.
Three miners were rescued and treated at the Siaya Referral Hospital after getting stuck inside a shaft on Tuesday afternoon while pumping water.
The deceased's body was transported to the Siaya Referral Hospital mortuary.
