Four children were murdered, and four others were wounded in an axe assault at a creche in Blumenau, a city in southern Brazil.
According to local authorities, the victims of the attack were three boys and a girl between the ages of five and seven.
The governor of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello, announced on Twitter that a male suspect had been apprehended.
According to a police official, the suspect, a 25-year-old man 25, is believed to have vaulted over a wall into the yard of the Cantinho Bom Pastor creche before assaulting the children.

According to local authorities, he fled after teachers rushed to the children's aid and later turned himself in to authorities. Mello voiced his support for the casualties. Saying that May God comforts the hearts of all families in this time of deep sadness
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also gave his condolences.
President Lula wrote on Twitter. "There is no greater pain than that of a family that loses its children or grandchildren, even more so in an act of violence against innocent and defenceless children,"
