Seven children are recovering from food poisoning from mushrooms they ate on Wednesday night at the Bahati sub-county.

The seven, aged one to eighteen, reportedly consumed wild mushrooms before complaining of stomachaches.

The seven were very weak, vomiting, and experiencing excruciating abdominal pain when they arrived at the hospital, according to Sub County Medical Officer Lucy Kananu.

Kananu mentioned that the family from Haji in Subukia had consumed the mushrooms as their only food for the evening and that the children's conditions were steady.

“It is always good to ascertain the type of mushrooms one is taking as there are some that are very poisonous,” Kananu said.

Further, she added that families in the Sub County were hunger stricken.

The children’s father, Henry Kamau, regretted that he could not afford them a meal and depended on what the children had gathered from the neighbouring fields for their evening meal.

“We had a poor harvest last year and can now hardly afford a meal a day,” he said, pleading for help.
