Eight Leopard 2 tankers promised by Canada to Ukraine to assist the war-torn country in repelling Russia's invasion have arrived in neighbouring Poland, Defense Minister Anita Anand said on Friday.

Ottawa declared in February that it would quadruple the number of tanks pledged to Kyiv the previous month. The 55,000-kilogram German-made beasts form the backbone of the Canadian military's arsenal and are among the most advanced.

"All eight Leopard 2 battle tanks pledged by Canada for Ukraine are now in Poland," Anand tweeted.


"We will continue to #StandWithUkraine and equip Ukrainians with the tools they need to fight and win this war," she said.

Germany and the United Kingdom supplied Ukraine with 18 modern Leopard tanks and 14 Challenger 2 tanks, respectively, ready for deployment to the frontlines after Ukrainian forces completed training on them.

The tanks, which had long been on Ukraine's wish list, arrived in time for the country's projected spring onslaught.

Spain has also committed to sending six Leopards. The US, for its part, has offered 31 Abrams tanks but has stated that they would be delivered in the autumn.
