A bus transporting a group of mourners rolled at the Josa location along the Wundanyi-Mwatate road in Taita Taveta County, killing 13 people.

After attending a burial in Mghambonyi, the mourners went to Mombasa.

According to investigators, the truck included 34 adult passengers and an unknown number of minors.

According to Mwatate sub-county police commander Morris Okul, the bus' brakes failed and crashed into a slope, killing the occupants.

Several additional passengers were injured due to the event, and they were brought to hospitals in Mwatate and Voi for treatment.

The bodies of the 13 passengers were transferred to the morgue at Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi.

The actual number of passengers being taken by bus was unknown at the time of going to press.

Okul stated that police had launched their investigation into the accident.

Officers warned drivers unfamiliar with the route to be cautious and avoid overspeeding.

According to eyewitness Walter Mwadime, ten people perished in the 8 p.m. gruesome catastrophe.

"People volunteered to rescue tirelessly until 1:00 a.m., when we pulled the last victim from the wreckage, which turned upside down, trapping people beneath it," Mwadime added.

Aside from the rescue operation, he stated that people had difficulty managing a group of young males who wanted to plunder the accident victims.

The Josa area is considered a danger zone, and many people have died while travelling over the winding road.

Last November, a school bus carrying mourners from Mombasa rolled through the neighbourhood, killing several people.
