Five High School pupils were killed in a collision on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway between Naivasha and Delamere at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
The students from Mbihi Friends Girls High School in Vihiga were part of a larger group travelling from Nakuru to Nairobi in an 11-seater public service vehicle.
Official reports from the police indicate that the matatu driver was overtaking other cars before hitting the lorry. According to OCPD Benjamin Bowen, the driver encountered an incoming trailer headed to Western Kenya and swerved to the right to avoid colliding with the incoming vehicle.
Unfortunately, the trailer collided with the matatu on the left side, causing the latter to lose control and crash off the highway. Five students from Mbihi Girls Secondary School in Vihiga County died on the spot due to the collision.
