About 2,000 families in Mandera have been displaced after 12 hours of heavy rains characterized by floods pounded the area.

The floods submerged their homes, forcing them to seek refuge on higher grounds as the storm left a trail of destruction, uprooting trees and other structures in its path.

According to preliminary reports, about 100,000 families were affected in parts of Mandera East, Mandera North and Mandera West constituencies, where a heavy downpour was witnessed since the rainy season resumed.

Residents who have been displaced are requesting immediate action to evacuate to higher grounds to save lives and property.

While reviewing the effects of the floods, Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif cautioned locals to be cautious of the hazards of water-borne diseases and advised them to specifically watch out for youngsters more susceptible to catching such infections.

Although he arranged to start distributing aid to impacted households, he also appealed to all partners to support Mandera County during this trying period.

“As of tomorrow (Monday), we will dispatch teams to all affected areas to help them with whatever they need so as to survive . The county is just emerging from an emergency caused by prolonged drought and was moving into another Emergency that caused by torrential rains,” he said.

On his part, Mandera County Commissioner Amos Mariba told the residents to move to higher grounds so as not to be affected by the floods.

He also added the government would do all it can to help the residents affected by the rains which have come with floods.
