On Sunday, a Nairobi-bound matatu caught fire, forcing passengers to flee for safety.

The matatu was hauling sacks of charcoal, according to the passengers.

"The fire originated from the carrier, where the sacks of charcoal had been loaded," one of the passengers explained.

The matatu is alleged to have left Kivaa market in Masinga, Machakos county, on its way to Nairobi.

On the Mwingi-Thika route, the matatu allegedly caught fire soon before reaching Matuu town.

"The driver sped into a nearby car wash station, where water was used to extinguish the fire." "We also took our burning sacks and tossed them to the ground," a passenger stated.

The matatu's conductor stated that the incident occurred unexpectedly and that they were quite fortunate.

Some passengers who had entered the vehicle allegedly refused to continue their trip in the same van due to safety worries.
