President Ruto has stated that Kenya will borrow money from Singapore to build inexpensive and suitable housing for Kenyans.

This he stated at a meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Loong at State House on Thursday, applauding the housing model Singapore has adopted over the years to offer decent homes for its inhabitants.

President Ruto expressed hope that with Singapore's knowledge and help, about 6.5 million people will be able to benefit from the government's ambitious housing plan.

"We have agreed to diligently investigate methods of gaining information and assistance from Singapore's highly successful housing model," President Ruto stated.

"Singapore has one of its most successful public housing stories." According to the Prime Minister, 85% of Singaporeans reside in decent, cheap public housing."

The president ahead on to say that the development plan can only be realized if sacrifices are made toward the vision, such as implementing mandated savings measures.

"They (Singapore) took some difficult choices and made certain concessions where they performed mandatory savings, and the outcomes are there for everyone to see," he said.

Other agreements reached between the two countries included the development of long-term strategic alliances based on finance and ICT, as well as considering investment potential in Kenya's transport and logistics industries.

President Ruto has stated in previous speeches that the government intends to build 200,000 dwellings per year, creating job possibilities for Kenyan youth.

However, the proposal has sparked widespread outrage because the government intends to remove 3% of civil officials' wages to cover housing costs.
