A group of Meru leaders has criticized the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Control (NACADA) for classifying Miraa as a drug.

The politicians, led by the Meru senator and Senate Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi, have stated that they will introduce an amendment Bill to remove Miraa from the country's medicines list.

Senator Kathuri also stated in Maua Town that the region depends entirely on Miraa and that the government should assist them in finding other markets.

Mwenda Ithiri, Meru County Assembly Minority Leader, repeated the remarks, urging Meru Mps to protect the crop.

Miraa was ranked third in NACADA's recent report on ramping up the fight against alcohol and drug misuse in Kenya.
