Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has slammed suggestions that Chief Justice Martha Koome's state-of-the-art automobile she used on Madaraka Day was extravagant.

CJ Mutunga, in calling for impartiality in all branches of government, stated that the Judiciary should not be vilified.

Using his previous experience, CJ Mutunga stated that he had requested a plane for the Judiciary because it was less expensive than hiring one.

"If the public believes that the judiciary is a stump rather than an arm of the state," he said in a tweet defending the new car, a Toyota Land Cruiser 300 GR sport.

The 2023 Toyota Land Cruiser 300GR Sport represents a change in the CJ's office, coming years after his predecessor, CJ David Maraga, complained that he couldn't receive a new taxpayer-funded automobile despite pleas.

CJ Maraga startled Kenyans in November 2019 when he complained about not owning a Mercedes Benz.

"We were told it was a waste for CJ not to have a Mercedes, but the two Speakers of Parliament do." "I have a Mercedes 250 that many people can afford, whereas the Speakers of both Houses have Mercedes 500s," he stated.

CJ Maraga, who accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta's government of mistreating him, said he had "fought" for the Judiciary's respect and presence.

"I've never had a Mercedes, and I don't mind. Allow the office to be treated similarly to that of the Speaker and Uhuru. We are not to be viewed as illegitimate children."

With CJ Koome now driving a new car, CJ Mutunga recalled his predecessor's words: "I believe CJ Maraga was referring to the equality and equity of state institutions rather than the individualization of leaders." Such inequity and unfairness generate the idea that the government and legislature possess national resources."

The discussion centred on CJ Koome's automobile, as Kenyans lamented the government's extravagance in light of ordinary Kenyans' high cost of living.
