Kitui East Member of Parliament(MP), Nimrod Mbai, has been released on a Kes50,000 police bond and his firearm was confiscated.

Mbai had previously been detained after turning up at the Kitengela Police Station and accusing someone of beating him. The alleged victim was a Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) employee.

After his case was forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution for the modification of charges, Mbai did not enter a plea before a Kajiado Court on Wednesday.

The MP will now face charges of assault, electricity theft, and unlawful power connection in court on July 11, 2023.

Mbai was seen on camera on July 3, 2023, abusing and slapping a Kenya electricity engineer who had come to his home in Kitengela's Acacia Estate to terminate an unauthorised electricity connection.

The video has since gone viral on social media.

Angered KPLC employees from the Kitengela office organised a peaceful demonstration on Wednesday from the company's offices to the Kitengela police station to express their disapproval of the incident.

The workers lamented the growth in illicit power line connections and the frequent attacks on KPLC employees while at work. They urged the government to intervene and detain the offenders.
