On Monday, Kisii Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Caroline Ocharo charged twenty-seven men for conducting unlawful protests during the Saba Saba anti-government protests.
Additionally, five defendants were charged with willful destruction of the headlights and windscreen of a government vehicle.
In Kisii town, 12 accused were charged with malicious damage for allegedly breaking the windscreen and headlights of a government car worth Kes 50,000.
The 12 were also accused of breaking window pens worth Kes 500,000 that belonged to the Kenya Commercial Bank.
To the charges, they all entered not guilty pleas.
Since nearly all of the accused were students attending colleges and universities in Kisii, Zelmer Bonuke, who was defending the accused, requested a free bond.
“The accused are not flight risk as they would avail themselves to court when needed,” Bonuke said.
Further, he argued that his clients have been in custody since Friday, and some were injured during the arrest.
“My clients were on the streets minding their own business,” Said Bonuke.
