Top government officials' pay may be raised, according to a proposal by the Pay and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

The President, however, rejected the plan and instructed SRC to raise salaries for teachers, police officers, KDF members, and other civil officials by 7–10% starting on July 1.

In response to President William Ruto's order to prohibit compensation hikes for senior state employees, the Deputy President has now dared Cabinet Secretaries to resign.

Speaking in Elgeyo Marakwet, the DP supported Ruto's order by asserting there is no need to raise their pay.

Top government officials may wait till the economy stabilizes. Let's first deal with our police and teachers. If a CS is unhappy with Ruto's decision to halt the pay raise, they are free to resign, and we will bring in someone else, he said.

He continued that even if money is available, they won't accept it and will return to the sender' if supplied.

Gachagua recommended using the funds to help older people and women instead of buying fertilizer for farmers.

Since then, SRC has stood by its choice, arguing that the review was a component of an earlier cycle put on hold because of Covid-19.

Covid-19 had an impact on the wages evaluation, according to commission chairperson Lyn Mengich, but now everything is back to normal.

"SRC established a four-year review cycle, and the third review cycle is underway. Due to Covid-19, the salary structure was frozen. As needed, the panel has now evaluated the salaries, she said.
