According to officials, a small plane crashed into a hangar at a Polish airfield near Warsaw, killing five people.

According to rescuers, three passengers were aboard the plane when it slammed into the corrugated iron hangar, where 13 people sought cover from the storm.

"Five people died, and eight others were injured, two of them seriously," Warsaw police spokeswoman Sylwester Marczak said, adding that the pilot was among those killed.

At a small airstrip known for parachute jump training, the jet crashed near Chrcynno, a hamlet 47 kilometres from Warsaw.

The Cessna plane had been modified to transport parachutists. The local fire department shared a shot of the plane's tail protruding out of the hangar on Facebook.

Marczak stated that police were notified shortly after 1730 GMT and that an inquiry would be launched.
