Three elephants were killed on Saturday in Rombo after they trampled a woman and burst her two-year-old child’s head to death.

With arrows, the enraged locals pursued the elephants and killed two.

Another rogue elephant was slain by Kenya Wildlife Service personnel after it turned wild and charged at nearby houses.

Nempuris Nkaitol, 24, from Nyaru village, was carrying her two-year-old infant boy on her back and had gone to Nyaru Shopping Centre to buy food for supper, according to Chief Olgirra Location, John Logela.

Around 7.30 p.m., a lone, rogue elephant pursued her as she went home.

The elephant trampled on her and the child, killing the boy instantly by blowing off his head while inflicting significant damage on the mother's left leg.

Villagers rescued the mother after the elephant escaped into darkness.

She was rushed to Rombo Mission Hospital. Upon assessment, she was referred to Loitokitok Sub-County Hospital, where she was admitted in serious condition and later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she receives treatment.

Loitoktok Sub-county Police Commander, Shadrack Rutto, expressed concern that in the recent past, there has been an upsurge in human-wildlife conflicts in the Sub-county.

He cited the case in Rombo and also that at Kimana Sanctuary, where there was an invasion of farms by rogue elephants who destroyed crops.

The security team has organised a meeting with the local community in Rombo to address the issue.
