On Friday, Elon Musk was in Japan, sparking curiosity on social media about the reason for his first known visit to the nation in nine years.

The billionaire posted late Thursday on the website X, which he acquired last year and was formerly known as Twitter, saying he had "just arrived in amazing Japan."

The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX paid a ceremonial visit to Japan in 2014 to announce his electric car manufacturer's full entry into the market there.

He briefly spoke with Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated last year, on that trip.

Analysts believe that the Japanese auto industry has lagged behind in the development of electric vehicles.

Along with the films of what appeared to be an exhibition, Musk also shared movies from teamLab on Friday. team Lab is a well-known Japanese art collective known for fusing projections, sound, and thoughtfully planned settings.

Users on X asked why Musk was in Japan in comments, with some believing that he went to see musician Grimes, with whom he has two daughters, perform this weekend at a music event close to Tokyo.

Musk has sacked tens of thousands of workers since acquiring Twitter for $44 billion last year and installed a paywall on the website that costs users $8 per month to use certain features and receive a blue checkmark designating a "verified" account.

Musk traveled to China in late May, where he met with various government representatives and promised to grow his company in the largest market for electric vehicles in the world.
