On Sunday night, a boat carrying 35 students from several high schools and five other persons collided with a rock near the Lamu port region.

According to Kenya Red Cross officer Lamu Abdul Hakim Abdu, the pupils had traveled from their villages on Ndhau Island, Kiwayu Island, and Makkoni Island.

They were sailing back to school on the MV UVUVI 1.

The boat is said to have collided with a rock in the Indian Ocean, causing its brakes to fail.

The passengers were stranded for three hours before Red Cross officers came and saved all 40 persons.
