Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua has warned of a possible second maize scandal in the country following the importation of 10,000 tonnes of genetically (GMO) maize without a gazette notice into the country by the government.

The maize consignment is expected to support the battle against the ravaging drought that has hit parts of the country.

She claims that the GMO decisions made by the government are roadside declarations because the ships docked before the rules of importation were made public and when farmers are harvesting their produce.

Martha Karua is concerned the importation of GMOs is a hot scandal in the making since President William Ruto was involved in a maize saga during the coalition government.

“ To wheeler dealers a get a rich quick medium, often imported needlessly at the expense of the local farmer. In the grand coalition government, as agriculture minister William Ruto was associated with the maize scandal,”. She added.

The party leader made these statements on Twitter after a ship carrying ten tonnes of imported maize landed in Mombasa yesterday.

The importation has seen other leaders like the Pokot Member Of Parliament David Pkosing threaten Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria with impeachment.

"We want to tell Moses Kuria that he will be the first Cabinet Secretary to leave office and might leave before the end of this month or before Christmas. If he continues like this, we will impeach him. We will collect signatures from tomorrow," he added.

However, the Kenya Airports Authority has not confirmed where the maize is coming from or whether it is Genetically Modified or not.
