The incident happened just two hours into the flight from Atlanta to Barcelona. The pilot asked if he might return.

In video footage released on X (previously known as Twitter), one of the pilots can be heard reporting the event to air traffic control, saying, "It's just a biohazard issue, we had a passenger who had diarrhoea all the way through the aeroplane so they thought it was a biohazard."

Flight 194 was forced to execute an abrupt U-turn back to its departure point because the crew deemed it a "biohazard" to continue the journey.

A video of the dirty jet was also published, indicating that it was unfit for anyone, passenger or crew.

"My business partner was on that flight!" X received a comment from a user. "It was really horrible. It dribbled down the aisle and smelled awful. It only smelled like vanilla s--t after being cleaned with vanilla-scented disinfectant. The plane was properly cleaned after landing."

Without delving into specifics, Delta Air Lines said, Our teams worked as quickly and safely as possible to thoroughly clean the airplane and get our customers to their final destination. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the delay and inconvenience to their travel plans."

It is unknown whether the passenger with the medical problem returned to the flight to Spain following the diversion.
