Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition is demanding the release of Former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga, claiming that he was arrested by the non-functional Special Support Unit.

The Coalition has linked his abduction to the police administration, saying his arrest is aimed at interfering with his pre-trial case scheduled for Monday, 18.

In a statement, the coalition further pointed out that Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome will be held accountable should anything happen to Njenga.

“The arrest is therefore clearly an attempt to interfere with that scheduled pre-trial. Maina’s abduction is also part of the ongoing targeting and intimidation of opposition leaders by the Kenya Kwanza,” read part of the statement.

Additionally, the opposition alleged that the abductors who did not identify themselves were in Subarus, wearing hoods and armed.

“The abductors were therefore easily part of the Special Support Unit that terrorized Kenyans during the anti-tax protests. The SSU is therefore very much alive, active and determined to intimidate and even harm Kenyans,” read the statement.

The Opposition Coalition termed the alleged abduction as a desperate attempt by the government to take the country back to the KANU era.

“Kenya Kwanza has failed. It is getting desperate and it will get increasingly brutal and dictatorial. We have to stand firm, fight and demand our freedoms and all other rights,”  Azimio said.

Njenga was allegedly abducted by unknown persons on Saturday night at around 11:10 pm in Ndenderu area in Kiambu.

According to his lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, the alleged abductors did not introduce themselves when they fled away with Njenga and his aide Felix Lakishe.

“My client Maina Njenga is still missing. He was abducted by police whose Subarus had a south Sudan registration number…He was never booked in any police station,” Njiru stated.
