Britam General Insurance has launched a health insurance package for children aged between 37 weeks and 18 years dubbed Milele Junior.

Britam General Insurance, CEO and Principal Officer Jackson Theuri noted data from the Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS) 2022 shows that only 20.85 percent of children below 15 years have health insurance, highlighting the gap that the insurance company aims to bridge.

“Milele Junior represents our commitment to ensuring that children have access to the best healthcare services from infancy to adulthood,” Theuri said.

Children who fall within the government's definition of "under 18" typically have access to health insurance through family plans purchased by their parents or legal guardians.

Milele Junior fills in this gap by providing families without such packages with a kid-only health plan, guaranteeing that no youngster goes without insurance.

Further, the cover provides for children’s health needs until they turn 18 years then, they can seamlessly transition to Britaim’s main Milele health cover with minimal requirements.

The comprehensive health plan covers vaccinations, pre-existing, chronic, and congenital illnesses, as well as inpatient, outpatient, dental, and optical care. It also covers bed and accommodation costs.

Doctors' expenses, diagnostics, Covid-19 coverage, and recommended medications are a few more.

Only 28.7% of people in Kenya who are economically active and between the ages of 15 and 49 have health insurance, making it one of the lowest rates in the world.

By offering affordable and carefully designed insurance alternatives for kids, Milele Junior aims to change these numbers.
