Kalvin Phillips is set to make his inaugural start this season for Manchester City in their League Cup match against Newcastle United. Manager Pep Guardiola is making rotations to manage a packed fixture schedule.
The English midfielder, who joined City last year, faced challenges, contending with a shoulder injury and drawing criticism from Guardiola for returning from the World Cup carrying excess weight.
The 27-year-old came on as a substitute in Saturday's 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest after Rodri's sending-off.
"Yes, he (Phillips) will start," Guardiola told reporters on Tuesday.
"The second half (against Forest) was a little bit more defensive… and he made three or four incredible options to help us breathe."
Mateo Kovacic and Jack Grealish are also anticipated to be included in the lineup. Kovacic, who was sidelined due to injury, missed City's last three games, while Grealish made a comeback as a late substitute on Sunday following a hamstring issue.
"Jack is much better, Mateo as well. I don't know how many minutes, from the beginning or the second half, but they are going to play minutes," the manager said.
Given the upcoming significant league matches for City, in addition to their involvement in the Champions League, Guardiola is ready to implement further adjustments for the League Cup fixture.
"Tomorrow is important, but Wolves, Leipzig and Arsenal is much more important."
On Wednesday, City will make the trip to Newcastle for the League Cup third round.
