Chief Justice Martha Koome met with President William Ruto at the State House on Monday, which Azimio la Umoja Leader Raila criticized as a reckless decision.

Speaking in Lamu County, Raila stated that if a meeting between the two was necessary to address the recent rift between the Executive and the Judiciary, it should have occurred in an impartial setting.

"State House is the home of the Executive. That is where the president resides. If there is going to be a dialogue over issues of governance, it should be held in a neutral ground," Raila said.

According to the ODM leader, the meeting indicates that the Executive is undermining the Judiciary.

"The Judiciary is being held hostage by the Executive, and we've seen this before. We saw it happen under the rule of Mr. Moi, and we've tried to caution the current CJ not to go to bed with the Executive," Raila added.

He went on to call the action an unfortunate development and expressed his hope that the integrity of the remaining judges would not be jeopardized.

Ruto and Koome met on Monday at the State House, as was previously reported, after weeks of attacks and counterattacks between the three branches of government.

President Ruto claims that members of the Judiciary are being bought off in order for them to rule against his policies.

Nevertheless, CJ Koome came out in support of the Judiciary and instructed Ruto to present any evidence that implicated judges.
