Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that he now enjoys a close relationship with former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

During conversations with vernacular radio stations, Gachagua shared that he and Uhuru have become friends following his apology for the negative remarks made about him during the election period.

"Uhuru, Mama Ngina, and the mountain people accepted my apology. Uhuru became my friend, and besides speaking more often, there are things we are doing together," Gachagua told the media roundtable.

In March 2024, the Deputy President apologised to the former First Lady for the negative politics during the 2022 General Elections. He sought forgiveness for tarnishing the reputations of Mama Ngina and Uhuru during the election campaigns.

“I am sorry for involving Mama Ngina Kenyatta in the last general elections politics. She is our mother. I therefore ask for forgiveness on behalf of our team for any inconvenience caused to her. I will never allow anyone to demean her or anyone from the region,” Gachagua told Kameme TV then.

“The former President Uhuru Kenyatta is our son. We worked together for 17 years and only disagreed for 2 years, and now that’s the past. I pray for him in his retirement. Uhuru is one of us. We shall talk with everyone.”

Previously, Gachagua had clashed with Mama Ngina on multiple occasions. In one notable instance, he demanded that Mama Ngina give up half of the Kenyatta land estate to the Mau Mau and their descendants, alleging that the land had been unlawfully acquired.

He also mentioned that he had organized the families to claim the land from the former first family.
