Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized individuals he claims are plotting to remove him from office.

Speaking to traders at Wakulima Market in Nairobi on Friday, September 20, Gachagua made it clear that he would not be intimidated by threats of impeachment. He emphasized that he was elected by the Kenyan people, and only they have the authority to remove him from office when the time comes.

Gachagua also alleged that some individuals were bribing lawmakers to support efforts for his impeachment.

“They are threatening me that they will assemble MPs to impeach me. They are assembling MPs and bribing them so that they can sell me fear. I was voted in by Kenyans and not MPs. Only Kenyans can remove me from my seat when the time comes,” Gachagua stated amid cheers.

He added, “Those people who are planning this, please don’t test us. And let me tell those who are insulting me that they are not insulting me but the people that voted for me.”

He said leaders should be careful with the kind of politics they are playing so as not to destroy the country.

“After five years people will go to the polls. It’s time to work, not time to hold meetings in hotels,” he said.

His remarks come amid reports that a group of MPs is planning to introduce an impeachment motion against him in parliament.

On Thursday, September 12, 48 MPs from the Mt. Kenya region endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their political leader. The lawmakers stated that a strong figurehead was needed to serve as a bridge between the region and the executive on development matters.

“Accordingly, we, as the elected leaders from this region and its Diaspora on our own behalf and that of our people, unanimously resolve that our link to the National Government be the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration Prof. Kithure Kindiki, ” read part of the statement.
