Tensions flared in the Senate chamber on Thursday, October 17, during Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment trial, when Kajiado Senator Seki Lenku clashed with Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.
Lenku accused the Speaker of showing bias during the questioning of a witness in the trial. In response, Kingi sharply rebuked the senator and threatened to eject him from the chamber if he did not apologize.
“You cannot direct the chair on what to do. Honourable Seki unless you apologise, I’m going to throw you out of the chamber. You cannot say the chair is biased. If you’ve noticed, we’ve been going on lots; one lot, the witness answers, then I go for another lot,” Kingi remarked.
The Kajiado lawmaker, however, seemed to lose his cool and told the speaker that he had a right to speak in the Senate chamber.
“I have a representation of Kajiado people. I have a right to speak in this Assembly. But it seems to be biased,” Lenku stated furiously.
He caught the attention of other Senators who rose to calm him down before he eventually apologised to the speaker.
The impeachment process of Gachagua is in the final stages in the Senate as witnesses continue to testify in chamber.
The process will be culminated with a debate on the motion by the senators later on Thursday evening before they make a vote.
