Hon. Martha Karua, leader of Narc Kenya and Raila Odinga’s running mate in the 2022 Azimio la Umoja presidential campaign has officially announced her party’s withdrawal from the Azimio Coalition.
Karua cited her coalition partner’s alignment with the government she claims "stole Azimio’s victory" as the reason for the split.
Looking ahead to 2027, Karua is now exploring alternative political alliances.
A staunch advocate for democracy and constitutionalism, Karua played a crucial role in Azimio’s 2022 campaign, bolstering the coalition’s credibility with her reputation for integrity and principled leadership.
Despite their combined efforts, Azimio la Umoja was defeated by Kenya Kwanza’s William Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua, securing 48.85% of the vote against Kenya Kwanza’s 50.49%.
Throughout the campaign, Martha Karua played a key role in rallying support, particularly among women and reform-oriented voters, while championing issues of accountability and justice.
However, her influence failed to make a significant impact in the Mt. Kenya region, traditionally a bastion of her political strength. Azimio’s underperformance in the region was a critical factor in the coalition’s overall loss.
Karua’s exit from Azimio raises broader questions about coalition dynamics in Kenya. While her departure reflects personal and party interests, it also highlights the lack of binding frameworks in political coalitions.
Analysts suggest that future coalitions should include clear timelines, constitutional inclusivity, and robust public participation to ensure sustainability and representation.
While her time in Azimio may not have delivered victory, her role in advancing democratic ideals and constitutional reform has cemented her legacy as one of Kenya’s most principled leaders.
