Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has refuted claims that he is President William Ruto’s new key ally in Kenya’s central region.
“I am aligning with Kenyans. Right now, we want unity. I was an Azimio person,” Njenga clarified, distancing himself from the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Njenga’s name has resurfaced in political discussions following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, sparking speculation that he could challenge Gachagua and rally the central region’s support for President Ruto.
During an interview on the HOT Breakfast show, Njenga dismissed accusations by Gachagua, who recently alleged that the resurgence of a State-sponsored gang was causing chaos in the region. Gachagua urged his allied MPs to petition the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the alleged revival of the Mungiki group.

“He [Gachagua] wants to take me to The Hague, yet he’s powerless. That’s just empty talk,” Njenga remarked.
Speaking on Hot 96, Njenga also condemned the rising cases of abductions in the country, recounting his own harrowing experience.
“I have been a victim of abduction. I was held for seven days while planning Raila-led protests. Hooded men took me just before dinner and drove me 300 kilometers. It was a traumatic ordeal, and the government should put an end to such incidents,” he said.
