In a landmark ruling on February 7, 2025, the High Court declared Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance the official majority party in the National Assembly, overturning Speaker Moses Wetang'ula’s 2022 decision that had recognized Kenya Kwanza as the majority.

This judgment carries significant implications for the current parliamentary leadership, particularly challenging the legitimacy of Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah’s position as Majority Leader, a role he has held since Wetang'ula’s initial ruling in 2022.

With Azimio now recognized as the majority party, leadership positions within the National Assembly are expected to be realigned to reflect this change.

As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding Ichung’wah's replacement. However, political analysts anticipate that Azimio will nominate one of its senior members to assume the Majority Leader position, in line with parliamentary procedures and the recent court ruling.

This development underscores the dynamic nature of Kenya's political landscape and the pivotal role of the judiciary in interpreting constitutional mandates. Stakeholders and citizens alike are keenly observing how these changes will unfold and impact the legislative agenda moving forward.
