Butere Member of Parliament Tindi Mwale has broken his silence on the incident involving Butere Girls High School’s play Echoes of War in Nakuru, where police halted the students’ performance.

Mwale condemned the officers’ actions, stating they should not have harassed the students and reminding them that they, too, are parents. However, his remarks were viewed by many as a delayed response to an issue that had already drawn widespread public concern.

The MP's remarks came after several days of silence, which sparked frustration among some Kenyans online. Many criticized him for taking too long to defend the students from his own constituency.

His delayed response led some to question his sincerity, suggesting he only spoke out once the issue had attracted public attention. Others argued that he should have acted swiftly when the incident first unfolded.

Meanwhile, public outrage was also directed at the police for blocking the students from performing a creative piece that tackled critical national issues. While some blamed the officers directly, others believed they were merely following orders, pointing fingers instead at higher-level authorities.

The play, written by former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, had received official approval for national performance before it was abruptly stopped. Echoes of War tackled powerful themes such as freedom, digital activism, and leadership in a post-conflict society.

Although a court later ruled that the students should be allowed to perform, the process was marred by delays and ongoing resistance. During this time, many had hoped local leaders like MP Tindi Mwale would step in more swiftly to support the students.

Public reaction to Mwale’s eventual comments revealed widespread disappointment. Online, many accused him of speaking out only when it was politically convenient, rather than standing with the students from the start.

The controversy around Echoes of War has ignited broader conversations about artistic freedom in schools and highlighted the importance of decisive leadership during moments of tension.

Despite the challenges, the students from Butere Girls emerged as symbols of resilience. Their message has transcended the stage, sparking national dialogue and inspiring many across the country.
