The Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Gender, Aisha Jumwa, has declared that she is on a mission to fire public employees who are still working after they should have retired.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Thursday, CS Jumwa stated that since beginning her job, she has observed that many public sector offices have many employees who should be at home already since they have reached the age-retirement requirements.

According to CS Jumwa, it has been customary for seniors who have reached retirement age to have their contracts extended, while younger people struggle with a lack of job possibilities.

Jumwa claims that she has already written to the Public Service Commission (PSC) to inquire about the situation and remove anyone beyond the legal age limit.

"While they have reached the mandatory retirement age, I have seen older persons who go to the PSC and receive contracts. They are offered contracts for two more years, one more year, and so on even if they are already retired "CS Jumwa claimed.

She continued, "I wrote a letter to the PSC and told them that we have legislation and if someone has reached the appropriate age to retire, aende akiendanga so that we provide the opportunity for younger people.

We also stated in the Kenya Kwanza manifesto that we would give young people in the country employment opportunities.

The Public Service Minister continued by saying that her proposal would create a smooth path for university students to enter the workforce.

According to CS Jumwa, the issue is so grave that university graduates have incessantly knocked on her office in the past few months asking for jobs.

She said a few people who wanted to stay in their positions had hampered the solution.

She asked, "What will happen to university graduates looking for jobs? Many of them have been visiting the office, but there are offices they qualify to fill, but the positions already have people who should have retired.

In light of this, why is this person still employed in some of these government positions?

According to the PSC Act of 2017, people with disabilities must retire from public service at age 65 and age 60, respectively.
