Opposition leader Raila Odinga has announced more protests next Wednesday after what he describes as a ‘Successful mission’ from the Friday Saba Saba rally.
The Azimio la Umoja leader noted that he was delighted that his supporters were brave enough to march to the Nairobi Central Business District from Kamukunji, where he addressed a rally.
“We made a major achievement because we were able to access the CBD even though police tried to stop us,” he said, declaring that “We are unstoppable.”
Police lobbed teargas to disperse a crowd following him from Kamukunji, where dozens of Opposition leaders accompanied him.
“We even got to KICC which they have always blocked us from accessing and we ended up at Central Park which was our destination from Kamukunji. so after this sucessful raly, we are going to have another one on Wednesday next week.”
Speaking at a press briefing at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF), the move is part of the renewed efforts to pressure President William Ruto out of power.
“The power belongs to the people and that is why I am saying that we must get it back,” he said as he launched the collection of 10 million signatures.
The head of Azimio also blamed the police for trying to stop the demonstrations, which he claimed Kenyans had a constitutional right to do, alleging that his convoy had been shot at during Friday's demonstrations.
During the news conference, he presented images of what seemed to be a bullet hole in the side of his car. In another picture, the rear glass of his car was partially broken.
“We were actually aiming to get to the KICC, and they blocked us, and they were shooting in our direction,” Odinga said.
Friday's large march to Nairobi's Central Park was part of earlier protests against President Ruto's administration that Odinga had called for.
Although Odinga could enter the City Centre, the anti-riot police met him and his supporters with a strong force and used tear gas and water cannon to prevent them from entering Central Park.
