Deputy President Rigathi Gachagu on Thursday attacked Opposition leader Raila Odinga over United States Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman regarding the August 2022 elections.

Gachagua said that Odinga’s threats to push for the recalling of Ambassador Whitman over ‘meddling’ with Kenya’s affairs are unfounded.

“I want to remind Odinga that William Ruto is the legitimately elected President of Kenya. You are just an ordinary person. You say you’ll fire the American ambassador to Kenya. Still, you don’t even have the authority to sack your assistant Chief in Bondo,” Gachagua said.

During the 8th Devolution Conference in Eldoret, Whitman said that Kenya’s election was the “most credible in Kenyan history”, which annoyed Odinga, who told her to “stop meddling in Kenya’s affairs kicking off a storm in the Opposition.

Gachagua criticised Odinga for what he claimed were attempts to destabilise President William Ruto's administration, but he also emphasised how little power an average citizen like Odinga had.

Gachagua continued by advising Odinga to take a sabbatical from politics since Kenyans had grown weary of his antics.

The Deputy President promised that, upon Odinga's retirement, he would see to it that the Opposition Leader was included in the government's cash assistance programme, Inua Jamii, which aids the weaker members of society.

Further, he claimed that Odinga has a history of using blackmail to coerce previous governments into granting his selfish demands, but he warned that he will not get his way this time.

He added that Odinga’s attempts to sneak into the Ruto administration through backdoor channels will not succeed, noting that the Kenya Kwanza administration is no pushover.
