Andy Robertson believes that after "taking a lot on" early in his captaincy, he has polished the position of guiding Scotland.

During Alex McLeish's second managerial stint, the Liverpool left-back received the armband and retained it under Steve Clarke.

Robertson led his nation to Euro 2020 and scored the first goal of Clarke's administration.

The 29-year-old admitted to the BBC that it took him some getting used to putting that armband on.

Robertson had been the captain of Scotland for five years when he spoke to Kammy and Ben's Proper Football Podcast.

"I was fairly young when I acquired. I believed I could resolve everything because of that," Robertson recounted. "I took on a lot. As you become older, you come to the realization that all you can do is exert control over the things you can".

I've gotten used to the position. It's cosy here for me. I enjoy leading the team. I know when to approach the players and when the staff members need an arm around their shoulders. I'll be here for everyone at all times."

Scotland's first Euro 2024 qualifying doubleheader against Cyprus and Spain is Robertson's next duty as captain. The two teams go to Hampden, with the Cypriots playing first on Saturday (14:00 GMT).

The top two teams in this challenging area advance, but Scotland already has at least a play-off spot secured for the finals in Germany after winning their Nations League group. The remaining teams are Norway and Georgia.

The Champions League and Premier League champion Robertson continued, "I've still got a few years left in me and maybe a couple more major tournaments as well".

"The awards I've received are incredibly fortunate for me, but leading my nation as captain ranks right up there with them".

"I only need to put on the Scotland jersey. It feels good enough to put on that shirt and represent my nation, but standing in front of the guys and directing them feels different".
