Ferdinand Omanyala, the Commonwealth Games 100m champion, won in 10.12 seconds in the opening leg of the ASA Grand Prix on Wednesday night in Tuks Stadium, South Africa.

Omanyala won with a late spurt, former world junior champion Benjamin Richardson ran second in 10.33, and Rivaldo Roberts finished third in 10.34. Kenya's Samuel Imeta finished fourth in 10.39 seconds.

Omanyala was pleased with his performance at the continental world tour challenger event, despite missing out on a sub-10 mark.

"We expected fast times, but a win is a win, and we celebrate and thank God in everything." We hoped to do sub-10, but each race matters, so on to the next. "I was also a little cold today," he admitted.

The African champion will remain in South Africa ahead of the event's second phase, which will be held next week in Germiston.

"We're hoping the next one will be faster, and the goal is still to run under 10 seconds." Omanyala explained.

Another Kenyan, Wiseman Was, won the men's 400m hurdles in 49.23 seconds.
