A Spanish judge dismissed Dani Alves' second bail plea on Tuesday (May 9) while the player awaits trial for alleged rape.

The 40-year-old was arrested in January after being suspected of raping a young woman in a Barcelona nightclub's restroom late last year.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player will remain in detention after the court investigating him stated there is a "high risk" that he will attempt to flee.

The High Court of Justice said it "rejected the defense's request for release."

It stated that his fortune "could allow him to leave Spain at any time."

It was Alves's legal team's second appeal for release after their initial request was denied in February.

His lawyers applied for bail again in April, shortly after he told the judge at a hearing that the couple had sexual contact but were consenting.

To reassure the judge that he could be granted bail this time, Alves' legal team proposed removing his two passports, Brazilian and Spanish, but the request was denied. a
