According to Fifa, this year's Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand is poised to break records as the most well-attended standalone women's sporting event in history, with over one million tickets already sold.

Gianni Infantino, the president of Fifa, announced on Thursday that the upcoming ninth edition of the Women's World Cup, commencing on July 20th, has already achieved a remarkable ticket sales figure of 1,032,884, surpassing the previous tournament held in France in 2019.

"The future is women, thanks to the fans for supporting what will be the greatest Fifa Women's World Cup ever!," Infantino said in a statement.

"The momentum is building in the host countries and across the globe, and I look forward to seeing you there to witness the stars of women's football shine on the world stage."

Due to the overwhelming public demand for tickets, Fifa already confirmed that Australia's opening match against Ireland will take place at the 83 500-capacity Stadium Australia, the largest stadium in the competition.

As a result, up to 100,000 spectators will be able to see the World Cup's first matches, with the co-hosts' game against Norway taking place in Auckland hours beforehand.
