Manchester United signed Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan in a deal worth up to Sh8.6 billion.

Onana has signed a five-year contract with the Premier League side and will replace David de Gea as goalkeeper at Old Trafford. United will pay an initial fee of Sh8 billion for the 27-year-old, with a further Sh639 million coming in performance-related bonuses.

In a statement released by the club, Onana said that joining Manchester United is an incredible honour, and he has worked hard his entire life to get there, overcoming many obstacles along the way.

He added that It will be another incredible experience to walk out at Old Trafford to defend a goal and contribute to the team and that This is the beginning of a new journey for him, with new teammates and new goals to strive towards.

De Gea left United earlier this month after 12 years with the club. The Spaniard battled with Erik ten Hag's tendency for attacking from the back, and Onana appears to be a far better fit for the Dutch coach's philosophy.

After failing to crack the first squad at Camp Nou, Onana moved to Ajax in 2015, where he won three Eredivisie titles under Ten Hag.

His career, however, was temporarily derailed in 2021 by a doping ban for using a prohibited diuretic.

Onana claimed he took medicine prescribed to his wife by mistake and had a one-year sentence reduced to nine months after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. When his contract at Ajax expired, he joined Inter on a free transfer just over a year ago.

He is United's second close-season signing, following England midfielder Mason Mount, who joined from Chelsea in July for an initial fee of Sh10 billion. Onana might make his United debut against Arsenal in a friendly on Saturday in New Jersey.
